Who?

fount magazine is open to submissions from creativesin any discipline of contemporary literature, visual arts, architecture and design, working in remote and rural areas of Scotland, (i.e. anyone living in a place with less than 3000 people living in it, and/or, living in a place which is 30 minutes drive or more from the nearest next place with more than 10 000 people living in it).

fount magazine locates and highlights creative practices in a range of arts disciplines situated in remote and rural Scotland. fount explores the relationships in and between the creative processes involved in contemporary cultural production and the localised and global community efforts to sustain economies, cultures and the environment.

What?

fount welcomes submission of poetry, flash fiction, fiction or non-fiction, comics and zines. Submissions are not limited to these works and fount welcomes discussing ideas for features or interview based articles. The indicative word count for submission up to 2500 words or two to four pages for visual works/interview based features. There is no fee regrettably for contributions. However, where interview based features are of interest, the editor will undertake any necessary travel.

Where?

fount is published online in pdf format, available to print at home, and in small batch print runs. Print copies will be made available at Birnam Arts, Birnam, Perthshire and ATLAS Arts, Portree, Isle of Skye.

When?

The next issue of fount is planned for publication in September 2025 with the issue after that pencilled in for November 2025.

Why?

fount magazine is formed of a personal agenda to highlight and amplify the creative processes and sources of inspiration that form art and culture in areas of remote and rural Scotland. Demonstrating that there is more to contemporary art and culture off the beaten track in Scotland than you might expect, this magazine seeks to connect research enquiry with creative responses to tackling the challenges of creating sustainable economies, communities, cultures and the environment.

How?

Submissions can be made to Louisa by emailing louisa.preston@stir.ac.uk with either your proposed submission or a summary of what you would be interested in contributing and we can take it from there! There is no deadline for submissions currently, though the next issue of fount should be going to print by the 22 September 2025.
